Physical Disability

CBM provides treatment and rehabilitation to people with physical disabilities in some of the poorest countries of the world.

Through our network of local partners and the expertise of our international staff, we are able to provide much needed treatment and rehabilitation that empowers people with disabilities.

The professional expertise of our international staff covers many areas of disability. Not only do they provide treatment and care that is needed, but they also actively train local people - ensuring that communities can become self-sufficient and are left with a legacy of skills.

Types of Physical Disability

Some of the most common physical disabilities that we work with are listed below.

Life or death

In the developing world, having a disability can really be a life or death situation.

For example, a child born with a cleft lip and palate can find eating and drinking very difficult, and in those early weeks after his/her birth, the ability to breastfeed is crucial to survival. In addition the child, and in some cases the parents too, may experience social barriers in education and employment - which in turn can lead to poverty.

Disability is a community problem that needs a community solution.

CBM works in partnership with national and local organisations in the developing world to ensure that people with disabilities are able to access the treatment, care, support, education and training, and community based rehabilitation (CBR) that they need to lead a fuller life.
