Estefan's Story

Estefan, from Peru, was born prematurely with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

His life had been a struggle from the moment he was born and his mother, Jacqueline, was afraid of the laser treatment he needed to correct his ROP. But, through her desperation for her tiny son to see, she agreed to his operation.

After treatment, Jacqueline couldn't hold her son, but gently tapped on the window of the intensive care unit to reassure Estefan of her loving presence.

"I want to take him with me once and for all," she explained.

And she will. The corrective laser treatment that Estefan received, costing £120 to provide, will enable him to have a brighter life, in the loving care of his family.

What is Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)?

ROP affects prematurely born babies and it is emerging as a big cause of blindness. It is likely to become one of the major causes in Asia over the next decade and is thought to be caused by disorganised growth of retinal blood vessels which can result in retinal detachment and scarring.

ROP can cause permanent blindness unless it is treated quickly.
