First time marathon runner raises funds for CBM UK.
CBM UK supporter, Simon Radley from Chelmsford, was amongst the thousands of runners who took part in the 2009 Flora London Marathon on 26th April.
This was Simon's first marathon, and although he had competed in many other shorter runs for charity, it proved to be a tough challenge.
"Things went very well during the first part of the race and I crossed the halfway mark at 1:31:58 still feeling quite strong.", Simon told us, "However, shortly after the 15 mile mark I started feeling very sick, dizzy and got severe cramps. I hadn't experienced this in my 20 mile training runs so it was quite a shock. As a result the last 11 miles were absolute torture, but the supporting crowd were wonderful, holding out jelly babies and shouting encouragement as I struggled along in one of the hottest London Marathons on record."
"I was very pleased to muster enough energy to sprint the final 400m to the finish and cross the line in a time of 3:29:42. I was a little disappointed with my time in the end based on my performance in the training runs, but there's always another year!"
David Stevens (CBM Country Manager for England and Wales) added, "We are extremely grateful to Simon for choosing to support our work in this way. To date, he has raised a fantastic £1800 with sponsorship which will enable us to continue to cure and prevent disability in the developing world".
