"One of the most horrifying disasters humanity has ever seen"
A former CBM co-worker in Port-au-Prince has described the scenes in Haiti as "one of the most horrifying disasters humanity has ever seen".
Dr Yuri Zelinski MD, MPH, MPHI, is a former co-worker at the CBM supported Ophthalmology Department of the State University Hospital in Port-au-Prince contacted CBM to share with us the extent of the devastation left by the earthquake and its aftershocks.
Unfortunately, the ophthalmologist, Dr. Emmanuella Delaguerra, is missing, and our only hope is that she is among the survivors somewhere in the medical camp unconscious. We have been advised that her husband and younger child died.
Yuri told us, "psychological, social and monetary damage is immeasurable and human loss is irreplaceable within decades. We share grief and pain with their families and friends."
"Even though, life is destroyed and our fellows are lost, our spirit is stronger than ever. We stay united. We have lost our capacity to act and with your help we will rebuild Haiti."
CBM has been working with local partners in Haiti since 1976 to provide treatment and rehabilitation to people with disabilities, and those at risk of disability.
