Celebrated on 12th May, International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every year. It is a day to learn more about the vocation of nursing and the places in which nurses work.

    Training nurses

In 2009, CBM-supported projects trained more than 3,000 nurses/nurse aides, and supported 11,603 nurses in projects in some of the poorest countries of the world.

Through CBM and its partners, it costs just £150 to provide a general nurse with three months of specialist training for eye care.

Dr Andrew Hodges, Plastic Surgeon at the CBM-supported CORSU hospital in Uganda, where they employ 45 nurses, told us just how crucial nursing staff are to his team.

"Through training at CORSU from many specialists, nurses are increasing in their skills and do an excellent job in theatre, the ward and outpatients".

"We certainly could not do the work we do without trusting and relying on our nurses to provide care" - Dr Andrew Hodges, CBM-supported Plastic Surgeon at CORSU, Uganda
