New Chair of Trustees appointed

Jan Flawn, CBM Chair of Trustee.

“CBM UK is delighted to welcome Jan Flawn CBE, a registered nurse and award-winning business woman with a passion for improving the lives of people with disabilities, as its new Chair of Trustees.

Having left school with no qualifications, Jan was inspired to train as a nurse when her daughter was born with spina bifida. Following a long career in the NHS, Jan then gained an MBA and went onto set up PJ Care, a leading company providing specialist care for people with neurological conditions. Jan was recently awarded the First Woman in Business Services award from the Confederation of British Industries. In 2014, she received a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the care home business and charitable fundraising.

Of her appointment, she said: “I’m passionate about helping disabled people and feel privileged to join the board of CBM UK. I look forward to learning more about the difference our supporters are making to people in the very poorest communities of the world”.

“Being the Chair of the Board is thinking beyond the ‘here and now’, it’s about ensuring we are fit for the future and that we are responsive to everyone’s needs, especially people with disabilities. We will continue to reach out and create lasting change for millions of individuals and communities living in the poorest places of the world.”

Kirsty Smith, Chief Executive of CBM UK said: “We are delighted to have Jan join us as chair of the board at what is a really exciting time for CBM UK as we launch our new and ambitious strategy for the next 4 years. CBM has been supporting people with disability, their families and communities for over 100 years and we need to ensure that we continue to meet the changing needs of the people we support in the world’s poorest communities long into the future.

“Jan will play an important role in ensuring we continue to deliver life changing services and campaign for change to improve the lives of the 1 billion people living with disabilities across the world. I have no doubt that Jan will bring the right values, as well as the right experience to drive forward CBM UK’s work.”

Jan replaces Max Teare, who stepped in as interim chair and has been a Trustee since 2013. Max continues as a Trustee of CBM UK and he will also take up a new role as Chair of the CBM International Board in June.
