A programme delivering essential eye health care services to the people of Mandritsara district of Madagascar.
The Eye Programme at Hospitaly Vaovao Mahafaly ('Good News Hospital') has been supported by CBM since 2004, and is run by the Association of Baptist Churches of Madagascar.
The programme is responsible for delivering high quality eye care services to a population of around one million people in the Mandritsara district in the north of the country. The programme's resident ophthalmologist runs regular eye clinics as well as performing surgery at the hospital.
Cataract is the most common of the causes of blindness for which the project provides treatment and support, accounting for 50% of all cases. Glaucoma and corneal scarring are also common in this area.
The programme's eye department comprises an out-patient clinic, an eight bed ward, and an operating theatre.
