A programme delivering essential eye health care services and training to the people of the Antsirabe district.
The Eye Work Programme provides eye care for the Antisrabe district through an eye department based at the Malagasy Lutheran Church Hospital in Antsirabe. It covers a population of around half a million people, with the most common causes of blindness being cataract, glaucoma and corneal scarring.
The eye unit comprises an out-patient clinic, an optical workshop, an eye drop production facility, a 22 bed ward, and an operating suite.
The programme also actively uses outreach campaigns to locate those in need of eye health services in the surrounding district.
Two resident ophthalmologists run regular eye clinics and perform surgery at the hospital.
In addition, the programme is also used by a university department in Antananarivo as a training site for ophthalmology students.
