An eye care programme delivering essential treatment to the blind and visually impaired in eastern Zimbabwe.
CBM has supported the Mashonoland East Vision 2020 Programme since 2004. It is based in the Marondera Provincial Hospital some 75km east of Harare.
The programme reaches out to a population of around 1.4 million people. It is estimated that around 1% are blind, with half of all cases being due to cataract.
Glaucoma and corneal scarring are other common causes of blindness in this area.
The Eye Department shares facilities in the out-patient department of the hospital, where 30-bed wards and an operating room are made available for eye patients on two days a week.
Outreach campaigns to find cataract patients are undertaken in the local area by the ophthalmologist.
