A national campaign to eliminate River Blindness and other neglected tropical diseases (NTD).

Established in 2003, and implemented in partnership with the World Bank funded African Program Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) and the Mectizan® Donation Program (MDP), this programme provides reliable, durable and integrated mechanisms for the distribution of Ivermectin drugs with a view to eliminating Onchocerciasis (River Blindness) as a public health problem in Burundi.

In 2007, a new component was added to the programme to treat people affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) including:

  • Schistosomiasis
  • Helminths
  • Trachoma
  • Lymphatic Filariasis

The project aims to eliminate the impact of these four diseases have on public health whilst developing a local capacity that will be able to treat and control these diseases in a sustainable manner.
