Sambava Eye Hospital

A provider of essential eye health care services to people of North Eastern Madagascar.

Supported by CBM since 2005, the eye unit, which is part of Sambava Hospital, is located in the town of Sambava in the north eastern region of Madagascar.

The eye unit is responsible for providing essential eye health care services to a population of around one million people in the Sambava district and neighbouring areas. It comprises a ten bed ward alongside an operating theatre.

It is estimated that around 1% of the population is blind, with cataract being the cause of around half of all cases. Glaucoma and corneal scarring are also common causes of blindness in this area.

The eye unit's ophthalmologist undertakes outreach clinics to identify those who have a visual impairment, referring those who require surgery back to Sambava Hospital.
