Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Deafblind (HKIDB)

Partner: The Helen Keller Institute
Project #: P1978

A programme providing essential education and training to deaf and deafblind children and young adults.

Founded in 1979 and supported by CBM since 1998, the Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Deafblind (HKIDB) follows a philosophy of 'total communication' in its teaching of the deaf, deafblind and those who are deaf and with other impairments.

The programme, which is based in Byculla, offers a range of vocational training programmes in printing, binding, Braille embossing, typewriting and computer courses to children and young adults.

Teaching staff use basic modes of communication to deliver this range of training, including hand touch, palm writing, Braille and sign language.

CBM has funded the creation of classrooms and an audiometry and vision stimulation room for people who are deafblind. CBM has also funded the development of a gymnasium and physiotherapy room.
