Delivering training and essential eye health services to the poorest and remotest parts of Afghanistan.
Supported by CBM since 1986, the NOOR Provincial Ophthalmic Care (POC) programme organises outreach campaigns to identify and refer patients with eye health conditions.
The programme reaches out through eye camps and day clinics across some of the most volatile areas of the country, where no eye care infrastructure is otherwise available.
In 2009, the outreach programme screened more than 75,500 people and provided almost 2,000 eye operations.
In addition, the programme provides training courses for ophthalmic technicians and health education to communities.
After a hiatus due to war, the project re-started outreach campaigns in 2002.
Sadly, on 6th August 2010, Briton Dr Karen Woo and American optometrist Tom Little, along with their team from our partner the International Assistance Mission (IAM), were shot and killed whilst returning from an eye medical outreach visit in the Nuristan Province.
