A research and education group, working to improve eye health and eliminate avoidable blindness.
The International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH), which is based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), is a research and education group working to improve eye health and eliminate avoidable visual impairment and blindness, with a focus on low-income populations.
ICEH's research aims to provide valuable information for the cost effective implementation of Vision 2020 - The Right to Sight. CBM recently funded studies into cataract surgical rates, childhood blindness, and a key informant methodology study.
ICEH runs courses in public health for eye care as well as short courses in community eye health and planning for Vision 2020. Outside the UK, in country Vision 2020 workshops for planning and implementing sustainable eye care programmes are conducted. CBM often funds its partners to attend such planning and training workshops.
The Vision 2020 Links Programme is also based at ICEH and has been working since 2004 to improve the quality of eye care training through a formal links process. CBM has been one of the core funders of this programme.
Since 2008, CBM has been supporting Dr Andrew Smith in the co-ordination of the advisory working group 'Prevention of Hearing Impairment and Primary Hearing Care'. He has been seconded to our partner LSHTM, in order to co-ordinate this research.
CBM has also been supporting the establishment of a new cross-disability centre based at LSHTM.
