Prevention of Blindness and Visual Impairment

Project Partner: The Salvation Army
Project Number: 955

This medical eye care project is based in Brazzaville with a population of around 1.5 million people. It is the only existing service providing competent and affordable eye care in the capital. It therefore serves a large population, most of whom are economically disadvantaged.

The project, run by The Salvation Army, has seen a steady increase in activities with more than 4,200 eye consultations in 2006.

The eye department is managed by two Cataract Surgeons and a newly-trained Ophthalmic Clinical Officer joined the staff in 2006. A further expansion of the project is to be considered in coordination with the National Prevention of Blindness Plan.
