The Eye Department is part of a large district general hospital located in Vanga, in the Bandundu Province - around 300Km east of the capital Kinshasa. The department covers a population of over 6.5 million who are very poor with a high rate of malnourished children.

Outreach

The programme serves the province through extensive outreach which covers the districts of Kwango, Kikwit, Bandundu and Kwilu.

In Kikwit, a second Eye Centre has been established and an ophthalmologist is now permanently based there. Both units cover a vast catchment area.

It is estimated that around 80,000 people are blind, half of these are due to cataract.
