Bawku Hospital Eye Department
Project Partner: Presbyterian Church of Ghana
Project Number: 323
The Bawku Hospital Eye Department, operated by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, is attached to the Bawku General Hospital serving parts of the Upper East Region of Northern Ghana.
The area has a population of 370,000, most of whom are farmers but the hospital also provides services to patients from other parts of Northern Ghana, Southern Burkina Faso and Northern Togo. The total population covered by the hospital's services is around 2 million.
Clinical consultations are held daily and a total of 21,266 patients were seen at the hospital in 2006. Optical services including prescription of glasses, low vision services and an optical workshop also exist at this busy department. Eye drops are also produced at this project and last year over 65,000 bottles were produced.
Outreach
Outreach in Ghana allows surgical teams to visit other hospitals in the Upper East Region. Ophthalmic Nurses visit schools in the district to screen pupils and refer to those with refractive errors and other diseases to the hospital for treatment. Forty-two schools were visited last year and over 9,000 pupils were screened.
Training
Various training for eye care workers in West Africa, including a Diploma in Ophthalmology of the West African College of Surgeons, Ophthalmic nursing and primary eye care workers are also supported.
