National Refractive Error & Low Vision Services

Project Number: P2502

The project is based in Mbabane, Swaziland's capital city. It is helping to contribute towards the achievement of 'Vision 2020 - The Right to Sight' by tackling one of the first phase priority areas - namely refractive error and low vision (RE/LV).

Swaziland is a small country with a population of around 1 million, and therefore it is possible for the project to establish a National Comprehensive RE/LV service. This service will incorporate all elements of identification, referral, treatment and follow-up for visually impaired adults and children. A multidisciplinary approach will be adopted, involving health, education, rehabilitation and social welfare disciplines.

The partner is the Government, and the structure of the executive bodies falls under that of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, which seeks to improve the health and social welfare status of the people of Swaziland. It aims to achieve this by providing preventative, promotional, curing and rehabilitative services that are of high quality, relevant, accessible and sociall acceptable.

This project still requires funding, including:

Low Vision Devices: £1,600.00
Glasses (for adults and children): £740.00
School screening programmes: £300.00
