Services for the Handicapped Persons of Bujumbura

This Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme is based in Bujumbura and serves a population of approximately 400,000 people.
Services to people living with physical and visual disabilities are rendered through home visits by fieldworkers. The CBR project also offers some support to a school for deaf children and a small eye unit which runs a weekly consultation and operation day.
In order to reach more people with disabilities, the project is networking with other organisations with a view of promoting a comprehensive approach for identification and rehabilitation.
Surgery in the programme's eye unit is performed by a Russian Ophthalmologist and since the peaceful presidential elections of August 2005, a number of surgical campaigns have been held.
