The overall aim of this project is to render eye services by providing base and outreach services with a special emphasis to identify and treat patients with Trachoma. Trachoma is still endemic but few steps have been taken by government authorities to check or control the situation. Therefore, the services that CBM funds are essential.
The Eye Department of the general hospital is managed by the committee of the Frances Newton Hospital, situated in Firozpur, which is very close to the Pakistan border. It has a good reputation and it benefits many poorer patients in the area but due to its proximity to the border, it remains generally underserved.
The objective of the project is to include the provision of curative and preventive eye services, low vision services and to educate the villagers about sanitation and the importance of maintaining a clean water supply.
The following activities are undertaken by the project:
- Screen camps with special emphasis on non-school going children
- School screening
- Identification and treatment of screened patients of Trachoma
- Health Education on eye care, nutrition, sanitation and other preventive measures
