Schieffelin Leprosy Research and Training Centre (SLRTC) is a premier leprosy centre in Asia, located in Karigiri in the state of Tamil Nadu and the hospital is involved in conducting research on Ocular Leprosy. The project covers Gudiyatham Taluk, Walajah Taluk in Tamil Nadu and part of bordering Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh State.
SLRTC has transformed itself into a general hospital and the Eye Department is supported by CBM. The Eye Department provides treatment and cure to various eye disorders like cataract, ocular leprosy and refractive errors.
In 2006, almost 6,000 cataract consultations were undertaken. The Community Eye Care Services (CECS) has progressively developed and is now a fully-fledged wing that helps in reaching eye care services to the doorsteps of the needy population, through field workers and camps organized to screen eye patients.
