Scudder Memorial Hospital is located in a fast developing town in Tamil Nadu. The eye department of this general hospital provides eye care services to the rural poor focusing on cataract, refractive errors and glaucoma. Operations are conducted on Mondays and Saturdays, with an average of 50 cataract surgeries being performed each month.
Outreach Camps
They also conduct outreach programmes by sending their field workers to the villages to screen patients and refer them to hospitals for treatment. Outreach Camps are conducted weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Outreach team consists of an ophthalmologist, a camp organizer, two technicians and a nurse. The camps are usually conducted within a radius of 30Km and are presently extending to the neighbouring district of Chittoor, State of Andhra Pradesh. As part of this outreach, school screening is undertaken every 3 - 5 months.
