Callan Services Special Education Resource Centre is located in Wewak, East Sepik Province, in the Northeast of Papua New Guinea. It is about 1 hour by air from Port Moresby - the country's capital.
This project has been part-funded by CBM through the Callan Services National Unit, in partnership with the Congregation of Christian Brothers (PNG) Inc. since 1991. In the interest of long-term sustainability, the Catholic Diocese of Wewak took over direct ownership of the project at the beginning of 2005.
The aim is for its present services (Community-based Rehabilitation, inclusive education, medical ear, eye and orthopaedic services) in the East Sepik Province to be fully integrated into the existing services of education, health and pastoral care of the Diocese.
The project operates independent of the Diocese but maintains a close relationship through the Board of Governors consisting of representatives from Diocese and Christian Brothers.
CBM has secured an EU contract since 2006, but this will come to an end in the latter part of 2009.
