Combatting blindness in Peru

Country: Peru
Category: Saving sight

In Peru, over 40% of the population live in poverty. Cataract is the leading cause of avoidable blindness and while treatment is available, many people do not know about it or can’t afford to pay for it.

We are working with 6 partner hospitals across 6 regions to prevent and treat blindness and visual impairment by:

  • Treating and preventing people from going needlessly blind due to cataracts;
  • Training ophthalmologists to identify and treat eye conditions;
  • Supporting hospitals and governments to improve eye health systems and coordination.

This three year project is supported by a USD 1 million grant from Seeing is Believing, a collaboration between Standard Chartered and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.
