Mental health support group in Ghana for new and expectant mothers

Enhancing maternal mental health and child health in Ghana

Category: Improving health

Women with mental health conditions in Ghana often struggle to access maternal health services. This leaves them at higher risk during pregnancy and child birth.

In partnership with local mental health organisations, we are:

  • training midwives and health workers to identify women with mental health problems and refer them for support
  • providing mental health support groups for pregnant women and mothers with children, helping them to access peer-support and medical treatment
  • providing support and training to pregnant women and mothers with mental health conditions to start or develop businesses working with traditional healers to tackle stigma around mental health in communities

This programme is supported by the Department for International Development (DFID).
