Saving sight in remote communities

Country: Democratic Republic of Congo
Category: Saving sight

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the least developed nation on earth, ranked at the bottom of the UN’s Human Development Index. An estimated 1.2% of the population are blind, with many people unable to access or pay for eye treatments.

Our important programme provides eye treatments to prevent avoidable blindness. As well as treating people in Vanga hospital, near Kinshasa, we conduct outreach camps, travelling with specialist staff to remote areas, far from the nearest large hospital, to identify people living with eye conditions and provide sight saving eye surgeries and treatments in their community.

The programme also trains eye health specialists and strengthens hospital systems, to improve eye health services for the long-term.
