Training eye-specialist doctors for West Africa

Country: Guinea
Category: Saving sight

80% of all blindness worldwide is avoidable, but many people living in poor communities cannot access treatment for eye conditions that would prevent them becoming blind, or restore their sight.

One reason for this is a severe shortage of ophthalmologists - doctors specialising in eye conditions - in many parts of Africa.

Our programme with DESSO training centre in Guinea enables eye doctors from French-speaking countries across West Africa to take part in a post-graduate training programme in Conakry, the capital city of Guinea before returning to their communities. Ultimately, this will enable doctors to perform more treatments for people who may otherwise become needlessly blind.
