Treating cleft lip and palate

Country: Uganda
Category: Improving health

Every year more than 170,000 children in the developing world are born with cleft lip and/or palate. Millions of children in developing countries with untreated cleft lip and palate live in isolation, but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing and speaking.

Cleft repair surgery is simple, and the transformation is immediate.

Through our partner-hospital our work provides life-saving surgery to repair cleft lip and palate for children and young people.

CBM doctor Andrew Hodges, a plastic surgeon, is a leading specialist at our partner hospital just outside Kampala, treating patients for conditions such as cleft lip/palate and burns, and helping to train other doctors.
