Watch the moment Desire has his bandages off and sees his children clearly for the first time.
Desire is a devoted Dad of four who lives with his fiancé, children and widowed mother in rural Cameroon, West Africa. But cataracts have left Desire almost completely blind – and it’s hard build a secure future for your family if you can barely see.
After leaving school, Desire moved to Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé to train as a carpenter. But his failing sight forced him to abandon this dream and he returned home to work on his family’s plot of land.
Even farming became more difficult. Every day Desire would leave his small mud-brick home at dawn to tend the crops. But once the sun comes up, he had to return home as he couldn’t see anything in the bright African sunlight.
Desire could not even read his precious Bible – he relied on his wife to read God’s word to him. Cataracts not only stole his sight, but his joy too.
Witness a miracle
After living with blindness for 28 years, Desire met an outreach worker from our partner hospital in Cameroon, who told him, thanks to CBM supporters, he could access free treatment to restore his sight.
After living in the shadow of cataracts for years, the day Desire dreamed of had finally arrived, when Dr Nkumbe carefully removed his eye patches.
Desire slowly opened his eyes and a huge smile spread across his face as he saw his wife clearly for the first time. He took his family bible from by his bed and began to read and said, “Thank God, God is great”.
