Accessing healthcare is especially difficult for many people in the current crisis. We must ensure that children like Memory get the help they need.

Memory was just three years old when her mother Ellana noticed her eyesight beginning to deteriorate. Instead of running to play with toys or friends, Memory would carefully shuffle around in a low crouch, picking up objects to hold close to her eyes. At the time Ellana didn’t know about cataracts, so was unaware Memory had developed it and that it was treatable.

Memory is now seven-years-old and lives with her family in a rural community in Malawi, Southern Africa. The family is poor, and live in brick-built huts, with layers of mud holding the walls together. For a blind child, these conditions mean there are countless opportunities to stumble and fall.

A cataract operation to give sight to a child blind in one eye costs just £95.

When crises strike, people with disabilities are often among the worst affected and the last to receive help.  In the current situation, our teams are working to make sure that those with disabilities not only get access to food and medicine, but also to the surgery they desperately need.

Did you know that a staggering 75% of the world’s blindness is avoidable? If diagnosed and treated soon after symptoms show, cataracts can be reversed.  But for many people living in the world’s poorest places the cost of an operation is too high. And so, every day, children like Memory become needlessly blind because of conditions that can be easily treated.
