See the Change: Sunday

Preparing for a life-changing week

Meet Frank, Project Officer for CBM’s inclusive eye health project.

On the day before the cataract outreach camp begins, Frank and the team travel to Nkhotakota District for a life-changing week of cataract surgeries.

It’s a five hour drive for the team from our partner hospital Nkhoma Eye Unit to get to Nkhotakota, a rural area on the shore of Lake Malawi, where most families support themselves through farming or fishing. Bringing services to these rural areas is vital if people living there are to access treatment.

Without outreach weeks like this, people with cataracts living in Nkhotakota have to make the long journey to Nkhoma to access sight-restoring surgery. It’s a huge challenge for someone who is blind and elderly - travelling on foot, by bike taxi and local bus the trip would take a full day.

Meet Henry Juta, Chief Clinical Officer, Nkhotakota District Hospital

In Nkotakota, preparations for the outreach week are well underway. Henry and his team have been contacting patients diagnosed with cataracts to let them know that they can get surgery at the District hospital this week. Many have been waiting for months for treatment, desperate to have the chance of seeing again.

The team have also been spreading the word via local radio to anyone with eye problems.

Prayer of the Day

“‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ ” Luke 4:18-19

Lord, we thank you that your Kingdom is a place of freedom and restoration. Thank you for the work of CBM which is showing your love in action to many people living with disabilities around the world. As we begin this See the Change week, we thank you especially for the people of the Nkhotakota district in Malawi, for the sight-saving work of CBM and our partners there, and for our supporters who make this work possible. We lift up this week to you, asking that you make us prayerful for those in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
