CBM advisor receives award for work with children with visual impairment in Palestine

Rima Canawati, Director of Programme Development at CBM’s partner Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation in Ramallah, Palestine, has received the International Leadership Award from the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI), recognising her outstanding service to ICEVI and children and young people with visual impairment.

Ms Canawati is Vice Chair of CBM’s Eastern Mediterranean Region Advisory Committee and a member of CBM “Community of Practice” on Inclusive Education. She is also a member of the Palestinian Higher Council of the Affairs of People with Disabilities, Deputy Chair of the West Asia Regional Committee of the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI), and country representative of the Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network of the World Council of Churches – Middle East.

At the Award ceremony in Orlando, ICEVI President Lord Low of Dalston honoured Canawati’s exceptional determination in persuading the government of Palestine to honour its obligations to children and young people with a visual impairment and in holding them to their commitments in very difficult political circumstances.

Bethleham Arab Society for Rehabilitation is one of the largest service providers for people with disabilities in the West Bank and has been a CBM partner for over 25 years.
