Dear xxx,

I am writing to express my concern at the huge and deep cuts the government will be making to international aid budget from 0.5% to 0.3%.

As the climate crisis worsens and instability threatens many of the world’s poorest places, now is a critical time for the UK to lead in international development – not step back.

That’s why I am concerned that the government has decided to reduce its UK aid budget to the lowest level for 25 years – leaving our country amongst the least generous nations in the G7. The safety and security of the people of Britain should always be a priority of the government, with defence, diplomacy, and development going hand in hand. Now is not the time for the UK to scale back its development and humanitarian support in the light of the current global scenario, and especially for the world’s most marginalised people.

UK aid, which is only just over 1p in every £1 of public spending, brings a huge return on investment for Britain. By lessening that commitment to development, these cuts will have devastating consequences, including for people with disabilities – one billion of whom live in low-and middle-income countries. It will mean less access to health services, medicines, education and economic opportunities, as well as vital humanitarian assistance. For some it will be a matter of life and death.

I am writing to ask you to use your position as an MP to urge the government to reinstate the previous aid commitments made.

I would be very happy to send further literature / put you in touch with CBM / meet with you to discuss this and introduce to you CBM UK (Global Disability Inclusion), an organisation that partners with people with disabilities in Africa and Asia, who are breaking the cycle of poverty and disability.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With all good wishes,
