Laxmi’ story
At just 25 years old, Laxmi, pictured opposite (far left), saw her life changed in an instant.
While gathering food for her family’s livestock in rural Nepal she had a fall, which resulted in a severe spinal cord injury.
Overnight, Laxmi lost the ability to walk.
Using a wheelchair was a challenge. And in the following months, medical treatment used up the family’s tiny savings and Laxmi had to close her small village shop. Unable to work in the fields, and with no accessible toilet at home, Laxmi became increasingly dependent on others for even the simplest daily tasks.
As the years passed, Laxmi became isolated. She faced hurtful attitudes from people around her and, little by little, began to believe that her life no longer had purpose. She fell into a deep sense of worthlessness. And without support from people like you, that’s where she could have stayed.
Years after one life-changing moment, another arrived. But this time, for the better.
When eventually our team came to Laxmi’s village, she was invited to join a self-help group for people with disabilities (pictured). The group is designed to support people living in some of Nepal’s most vulnerable communities to enable them to build secure and independent futures.
Laxmi wasn’t sure about joining the group, but with encouragement from the facilitators, she found the courage to go along. Once there, she discovered something she hadn’t felt for a very long time: that she wasn’t alone.
She told our team, “It was the proudest moment of my life.”
Surrounded by people who understood her experiences, Laxmi slowly began to rebuild her confidence. Before long, other members recognised her natural leadership and Laxmi was chosen to be their group coordinator.
She later became a Financial Literacy Youth Champion, helping deliver training in financial literacy across her community.
