Your caring gift is urgently needed to eradicate river blindness for good.
Help us reach the last few communities where people are still at risk.
It’s not the nasty, biting flies that cause the damage. It’s the parasites they carry – thousands of tiny larvae that slowly and agonisingly cause people to become permanently, needlessly blind.
River blindness doesn’t discriminate. Both adults and children are at risk of irreversible blindness, intense itching and skin disfiguration if they cannot access river blindness-preventing medication.
For the last thirty years, we have been working to eliminate river blindness. And we have been winning this fight, thanks to your support and the dedicated work of our local partners.
Together, we can eliminate river blindness for good.
Thirty years ago, CBM and a handful of other organisations came together in an alliance to eliminate river blindness and other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). NTDs are a group of chronic conditions that cause disfigurement, disability and death. They are most prevalent in poor communities.
To eliminate river blindness, at-risk communities must be treated annually for ten years. This ensures that every parasitic worm is wiped out – and that communities are free from the disease forever.
Mectizan – the crucial medication in river blindness prevention – is generously donated by the Mectizan Donation Programme. We just need your support to get it to those who need it.
Mass drug administration is a proven method for preventing river blindness, as well as other NTDs that we are working to wipe out, including lymphatic filariasis and schistosomiasis (snail fever). Your donations support community drug distributors like Isah, pictured, to ensure that river blindness-preventing medication reaches every person who needs it.
Funded by your donations, our partner Health and Development Support Nigeria (HANDS) has been carrying out mass drug administration to protect vulnerable communities from becoming needlessly blind.
We are also working with our partners to improve access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, which are crucial in the prevention of NTDs.
“I am looking forward to the complete elimination of river blindness in my community and our state.”
– Salisu, a community drug distributor in Jigawa State, Nigeria.
