Improving support for people with mental health problems and their families in Malawi

People with mental health conditions in Malawi often face stigma, prejudice and abuse. They struggle to access treatment and support due to the lack of mental health resources available, particularly in rural areas.

From 2018-2021, we partnered with the Mental Health Users and Carers Association (MeHUCA) to improve community-based support for people with mental health problems in Malawi by:

  • training community health workers, traditional healers, faith leaders and other community influencers in mental health, so that they can better support people approaching them for help
  • setting up self-help groups for people with mental health problems and their families in 5 districts, enabling members to support one another, access training and support to earn a living and to challenge negative attitudes to mental illness.

This 3-year programme was supported by Comic Relief (open link in new tab).
