Team ‘Sea to See’ raise £5,418 to save sight

A massive well done to Mark, Anne, Jon and Steve who successfully completed their Sea to See challenge on 29 April – cycling 200-miles from Portsmouth to Hunstanton in 14 hours. They have raised an incredible £5,418 to restore sight in the world’s poorest places.
Following his own successful NHS cataract treatment, Mark Greenwood from Norfolk set himself the gruelling 200-mile cycle challenge. He wanted to raise vital funds to help others facing avoidable blindness in poorer parts of the world, where many struggle to access sight-saving surgery.
Joined by three friends, the challenge was a tough one, but Mark and the team persevered. They were spurred on by the knowledge that every mile they cycled would help to restore sight to people living in some of the world’s most remote and hard-to-reach areas.
“We are so grateful to Mark and the rest of the team for taking on this incredible challenge to help restore sight to people living in some of the poorest places of the world,” said Kirsty Smith, CEO of CBM UK. “Every pound raised will make a huge difference to someone’s life, giving them the chance to see their loved ones, go to school, and live a full and independent life.”
Mark himself was delighted with the support he received from friends, family and colleagues, and said he was proud to have played a small part in CBM UK’s vital work:
“I’ve always loved cycling, but this challenge was about much more than that,” he said. “It was about using my passion for cycling to help make a difference to people’s lives, and I’m so grateful to everyone who supported me along the way. We wanted to raise enough money for CBM to carry out 100 cataract operations in remote rural communities, where having sight restored is a life changing moment. Now, we have raised enough for 200 operations – that’s one for every mile we cycled, incredible!”

Concerts in Cambridge: musical masterpieces by blind composers in support of World Sight Day
Cellist Joseph Reynolds and pianist James Williams are performing in two concerts in central Cambridge this month to raise awareness of World Sight Day, and raise funds for CBM’s vital sight-saving work. Everyone is welcome to attend these free concerts, with a retiring collection for CBM.

This World Sight Day, CBM UK is helping to focus the world’s attention on the importance of eyecare. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) organise World Sight Day each year, with IAPB members (like CBM) standing together to raise awareness of the importance of eye healthcare.
