Disability-inclusive Climate Action: How can we do better after COP26?

CBM UK will be joining a group of international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) on Monday 29th November looking at how best to ensure that people with disabilities are meaningfully included in climate change adaptation. Disability-inclusive Climate Action: How can we do better? is a hybrid event, run online and in-person in London, organised by the Bond Disability and Development Group. People with disabilities are among those most affected by the climate crisis but they are often excluded from decision-making processes and action to address climate change.

In the lead up to COP26 CBM UK led the authoring of Bond’s Disability and Development Group Climate briefing paper (open link in new tab). During the Glasgow climate conference CBM UK handed to Alok Sharma, the COP President, a copy of this paper and discussed with him the issues and key recommendations.

“An estimated 20% of people most vulnerable to climate change are persons with disabilities, yet they are rarely included in climate action.”

Contributors on Monday will discuss:

  • how climate action needs to be disability-inclusive and the pressure that needs to be kept on the UK Government following COP26
  • the inspiring work being done already by showcasing disability-inclusive climate adaptation already underway
  • what commitments INGOS can make to address disability inclusive climate adaptation

The event is open to all especially those working in advocacy and policy, funding, operations, evidence and learning roles from across the development sector.
